Sydney is a European settlement, founded as a penal colony by the British on January 26, 1788 which is celebrated as a public holiday, Australia Day, with major celebrations across the country. Sydney’s large, safe, and beautiful natural harbor was the reason for the establishment of the original penal settlement in the area. In 1788 the First Fleet, consisting of 1,400 convicts, soldiers, officials and their families, arrived in the area now known as Circular Quay located between the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. By 1840 convicts had ceased to be transported to Sydney and in 1851 gold was discovered which led to a huge population boom. By 1925, Sydney’s population had reached one million. Sydney has an international reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful and livable cities. It is a multicultural and cosmopolitan city, with a third of its residents born abroad. Sydney hosted the highly successful 2000 Summer Olympics, which raised the city’s global profile.
